Workshop on Functional Discourse Grammar
Expressions of tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality and polarity

The sixth International Workshop on Functional Discourse Grammar (IW-FDG-2017) will take place at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on 26-27 June 2017. As on previous occasions, the workshop will be devoted to a specific aspect of the theory – in this case expressions of tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality and polarity– and serves two major aims: (i) the development and improvement of the theory of FDG (Hengeveld & Mackenzie 2008) in the area of derivational morphology and (ii) the publication of an edited volume on Expressions of tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality and polarity in FDG consisting of the papers discussed during the workshop. Previous workshops have all resulted in the publication of a special issue of a respected journal. To realize these aims, a special procedure is followed in the preparation and organization of the workshop. Part of these procedure has already been completed. Submissions are no longer possible

The topic
The grammatical categories of tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality, and polarity (TAMEP) have received a lot of interest during the last few decades. Little attention has been paid, however, to the way in which these categories interact in complex TAMEP systems. At the same time, several authors have pointed out the similarities between individual TAMEP categories and classes of lexical modifiers, especially adverbs, but again less attention has been paid to the interactions between these and between grammatical and lexical modifiers. Grammatical and lexical modifiers may be referred to jointly as expressions of tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality and polarity. The aim of this workshop is to chart grammatical and lexical systems of TAMEP and the interaction within and between these systems, with data taken from a variety of languages, from the perspective of Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG). FDG offers an integrated layered approach to these systems, such that specific predictions can be formulated as regards the scope of TAMEP expressions, their ordering, and their grammaticalization and acquisition.
The workshop
During the workshops, each paper will be discussed in great detail during a number of chaired sessions. Participants in the workshop will discuss the papers of others, ask questions and make suggestions for improvement. The aim of this procedure is twofold: it will help to improve the final versions of the papers and it will allow us to create a unified set of papers, which will enhance the chances of publication as a special issue or a thematic volume.
