FDG2026, the Ninth International Conference on Functional Discourse Grammar, will be held in Córdoba, Spain, from 8-10 July 2026.

This conference will be preceded by an International Preconference Course on FDG on 6 and 7 July 2026.

Objectives

The aim of FDG2024 is to further elaborate the model of Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) as proposed by Kees Hengeveld and J. Lachlan Mackenzie, and to evaluate it within the broader field of functional linguistics and grammatical theory. Full treatments of FDG may be found in: Hengeveld, Kees and Mackenzie, J. The conference

All sessions at the conference will be plenary, so as to enhance discussion between participants. A poster session will be part of the programme. The language of the conference will be English.

The venue

FDG2026 will take place in the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras (Faculty of Arts and Humanities) Córdoba, Spain.

Abstracts

Abstracts should contain at least the following items: a clearly defined and well-motivated research question; the crucial examples illustrating the relevance of the research question; and the main conclusions of the paper. Abstracts should be approximately 1,000 words long, i.e. roughly 3 pages, and should not contain the name of the author. References to literature cited should be provided in addition to the 1,000 words. References containing the name of the author may also be given but will be suppressed before the abstract is sent to the programme committee. Please indicate in the accompanying message whether you want to present a paper or a poster. The deadline for the submission of abstracts of papers and posters is February 1, 2024.  Abstracts should be submitted electronically as a .doc file to the International Secretary of the Functional Discourse Grammar Foundation at functionaldiscoursegrammar@gmail.com.

Organizing Committee

The members of the Organizing Committee are: Carmen Portero Muñoz, Adela González Fernández, Pilar Guerrero Medina y Macarena Palma Gutiérrez.

Programme Committee

The board of the Functional Grammar Foundation (FGF) has appointed a Programme Committee that consists of the following members: Flavia Bezerra de Menezes Hirata Vale (Chair, Universidade Federal de São Carlos, Brazil), Riccardo Giomi (Universiteit van Amsterdam), and Carmen Portero Muñoz (Universidad de Córdoba). The Programme Committee will evaluate anonymized abstracts and decide on their inclusion in the conference programme. Abstracts submitted by members of the Programme Committee themselves will be evaluated by an independent member of the board of the FGF.

Preconference course

The preconference course on FDG prepares its students for participation in the conference and is aimed at graduates and postgraduates. The course will be taught by Kees Hengeveld (Universiteit van Amsterdam), and Evelien Keizer (Universität Wien). The course will be taught in English.
