Course venue

The course takes place at the English Department, which is located in Courtyard 8.3 at the City Campus of Vienna University. The nearest street entrance is Garnisongasse 13, see this map.

How to get there

From the U2 underground, station Schottentor: Take the exit Universität/Roosevelt-Platz. From there, you can either walk to Garnisongasse (10 min), or take a tram (37, 38, 40, 41, 42) to Schwarzspanierstraße (1 stop) and walk (5 min).

From the U6 underground, station Währinger Straße-Volksoper: Take the 40, 41 or 42 tram (direction Schottentor) to Schwarzspanierstraße (3rd stop) and walk (5 min).

Travelling in Vienna

Vienna has a well-functioning public transport system and tickets include travel on all forms of public transport (underground, train, tram and bus).

Depending on the length of your stay, there are various ticket options (some include reduced entry fees to museums).

You can buy tickets at the Vorverkaufsstellen ('ticket offices') at any of the major train stations (e.g. Schottentor, Westbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof, Wien Mitte). You can also purchase most tickets from the ticket machines at any subway station.

Arrival by air

Vienna International Airport (Schwechat) is located about 20 minutes from the city centre by taxi or 30 minutes by public transport. There are the following ways to get to Vienna from the airport:
• Airport bus. Price: approx. 8€ for Vienna Airport Lines. Tickets can be bought from the driver.
• CAT (City Airport Train). Price: approx. 12€ (return ticket approx. 20€). A separate CAT ticket counter is located in the arrivals hall, where you can also obtain information about all CAT services.
• S7 (suburban railway). Price: approx. 4.40€ (includes travel on the Vienna public transport should you have to change to bus, tram or subway in the city). Ticket machines are on the platforms at the airport and at Wien Mitte.
• Airport taxi. Price: approx. 30-35€. The cheapest option is to order a taxi in advance. This can be done on the companies' webpages.

Arrival by train

There are two major train stations in Vienna, Westbahnhof (West Station) and Hauptbahnhof (Main Station). Below are directions from these two stations to the workshop venue.

From Westbahnhof:
• Take the U6 underground (direction Floridsdorf) to the Währinger Straße-Volksoper station. • Take the 40, 41 or 42 tram (direction Schottentor) to Schwarzspanierstraße (3rd stop).
• Walk along Schwarzspanierstraße to Garnisongasse.
• Turn right onto Garnisongasse and campus is on your left, across from BILLA Box.
• Walk through Courtyard 9 to Courtyard 8.
• The English Department is on the right.

From Hauptbahnhof:
• Take tram D (direction Nußdorf) to the Schottentor stop.
• From Schottentor, you can either walk to Garnisongasse (10 min) or take a tram.
• For tram, take either the 37, 38, 40, 41 or 42 tram to Schwarzspanierstraße (1 stop).
• Walk along Schwarzspanierstraße to Garnisongasse.
• Turn right onto Garnisongasse and campus is on your left, across from BILLA Box.
• Walk through Courtyard 9 to Courtyard 8.
• The English Department is on the right.

Arrival by car

• Follow directions to the city centre (Zentrum) and you will eventually find the Ringstraße (which is a one-way street).
• Stay on the Ringstraße until Währingerstraße. Turn left on Währingerstraße.
• Stay in the leftmost lane and turn left at the second traffic light (you cannot turn at the first).
• Drive past a large Neo-Gothic church (Votivkirche) on the right.
• At the next traffic light, turn right into Alserstraße.
• Stay on Alserstraße until the second traffic light, turn right into Garnisongasse and find somewhere to park.

Caveat

Apart from the periphery, Vienna is a pay, short-term parking zone when parking on the street. The maximum parking time is 2 hours.

Short-term parking

To park on the street, you will need to buy parking tickets (Parkscheine) at a tobacconist or petrol station.
